Akathist Hymn in Honor of the Virgin Mary.  On the first five fridays of Great Lent the small compline service and the Akathist Hymn honor the Theotokos (Birthgiver of God).  The compline is a worship service with prayers and psalms.  The Akathist Hymn, one of the most beautiful and beloved hymns of the Orthodox people, is an ecclesiastical poem about the Annunciation of the Holy Virgin and the Nativity of Jesus Christ.  The Orthodox faithful stand during the hymns (unless sick or aged), the word Akathist means not seated.  Each stanza begins with a letter of the Greek alphabet.  Each Akathist concludes with the singing of the "Ti Ipermacho" (The invisible Commander) by all the people present.  The hymn  about the Theotokos, the protector of Constantinople, was composed in the seventh century A.D.  After she appeared in Constantinople during the siege by the Persians.  The enemies of Orthodox Christianity fled after their fleet was sunk, and the grateful Orthodox stayed up all night in Church composing this hymn in Her honor.
